DEERFIELD BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - Rescue crews transported a teen to the hospital after he came under fire at a park in Deerfield Beach, authorities said.
Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the shooting scene at Westside Park, along the 400th block of Southwest Second Street, Wednesday afternoon.
“I heard the sirens, and I saw people running,” said area resident R’meishia Williams.
According to BSO, they received a report about the shooting just after 5 p.m.
“I thought it was just firecrackers, until my uncle told me it was a child, shot,” said area resident Terry Scott.
“I heard, ‘Oh, somebody got shot,’ and I just went to pray,” said Williams.
Paramedics transported the patient to Broward Health North with life-threatening injuries.
“My heart bleeds now because I was born and raised in this city,” said Scott.
7News cameras captured deputies handcuffing and searching someone, although detectives have not specified who this person was.
7Skyforce hovered over the active scene where multiple deputy cruisers surrounded the area.
Crime scene tape was placed around a goalpost inside the park.
Neighbors said that these shootings need to stop.
“It’s a sad day in our city,” said Scott. “It’s sad, but I believe that we can pull together. We’ve just got to step up.”
Deputies blocked off the area as they investigated. The scene has since cleared.
Outside the hospital, 7News cameras showed the victim’s family members as they waited for word of his condition. As of late Thursday, his condition is unknown.
BSO confirmed that the child is a student at Deerfield Beach High School.
It is still unclear whether an arrest for this crime has been made.
This case remains an open investigation.
