HALLANDALE BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - A section of a building partially collapsed in Hallandale Beach Thursday morning, trapping two vehicles beneath the rubble, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue.
Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue crews and Hallandale Beach Police responded to 1250 East Hallandale Beach Blvd. at approximately 10:50 a.m. after receiving a report of a structural collapse at a busy office building that includes a gym, several medical practices, and other businesses.
Both vehicles were unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported.
A structural engineer from the City of Hallandale Beach and a representative from the building’s management team were on site conducting an assessment to determine the extent of the damage.
Jayme Weinstein watched the awning collapse and is thankful no one was hurt.
“It just collapsed out of nowhere. The awning came tumbling down,” he said. “God forbid anyone walking from the building to the parking garage.”
7News cameras captured pedestrians and building employees gathered around the scene. Many say they heard a loud noise before it crumbled to the floor.
“It sounded like an explosion, almost. I thought it was thunder, actually,” said a woman. “My coworkers said, ‘We gotta go.’ The police and the fire rescue came very fast.”
“We felt the building shake a little bit. Everything was completely destroyed. [At first,] I thought it was a car accident,” said another woman.
The property was promptly evacuated, and officials said it was not yet known when, or if, residents would be permitted to reenter the building.
“Nobody can take their cars out so my bike is stuck inside of there,” said a man.
“I wish I had stayed home,” said a woman who had a doctor appointment at the building. “I was there getting an injection, and everybody had to get out of the building.”
By late Thursday night, it appeared people couldn’t get their cars out of the garage. 7News cameras captured a garage filled with cars.
Now, cleanup is set to begin as investigators probe the cause of the collapse.
