OAKLAND PARK, FLA. (WSVN) - The Broward County Public Schools district is helping out schools in Lee County after Hurricane Ian damaged many educational buildings.

BCPS Superintendent Dr. Vickie Cartwright on Thursday met with members from the district’s Physical Plant Operations. These members took vehicles, tools and equipment to the west coast of the state.

Janitors, electricians and carpenters will help repair campuses damaged by the storm.

“These individuals are going to be working alongside some of their staff in order to prioritize this effort, so they can try to start getting back to normal as much as possible,” said Cartwright.

The workers will remain in Lee County until Friday night.

They are the second group to go to the disaster area. Cafeteria workers have also helped at shelters.

More than half the schools in Lee County were demolished during the hurricane.
