LAUDERHILL, FLA. (WSVN) - A 9-year-old boy is fighting for his life after, police said, he was shot at an apartment complex in Lauderhill.
Lauderhill Police and Fire Rescue units responded to the Riviera Hills Apartments, located on Northwest 19th Street, right in front of a Boys & Girls Clubs location, following a 911 call reporting a child with a traumatic neck injury, just after 9 p.m., Tuesday.
Paramedics found the juvenile unresponsive and transported him to Broward Health Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.
Neighbors were left in shock.
“I’m like terrified because I stay right there,” said one neighbor. “You know, I didn’t hear anything.”
Preliminary investigations revealed the child suffered a gunshot wound to the neck. Police said the bullet that struck the child came through a wall from a nearby unit.
Neighbors told 7News they saw police take several people into custody.
“When they opened the door, next door, we saw about four people [come] out, and [police] was searching them,” said one neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, “one by one, patting them down and putting one by one in the car, so we haven’t seen those come home yet, ’cause they were searching the house basically all night.”
The motive behind the incident remains unknown, and as of now, there are no identified suspect or suspects. Cameras showed investigators removing evidence from one of the units on Wednesday.
“I don’t know the guy, but whoever he is, he needs to turn himself in, if they haven’t already caught him, ’cause that’s sad,” said a female neighbor.
Lauderhill Police detectives are actively working on the case.
