DAVIE, FLA. (WSVN) - Broward County Schools offered a taste test of lunch menu items for the 2019-20 school year for staff and media.
Broward County Public School Food and Nutrition Services held their “Show, Tell and Taste – What’s on the Menu” event at Western High School, located on the 1200 block of Southwest 136th Avenue, in Davie on Wednesday afternoon.
Jason Port, BCPS’ chef, said the new menu has come a long way.
“It’s moving towards everything you eat when you’re out at a restaurant,” Port said. “It’s what you’re getting in the kitchens. You get vegetables, fruits. We don’t do salt, sugar, stuff like that.”
Some of the new menu items include Mac ‘n’ cheese inside a cornbread bowl, meatloaf, sunflower butter and jelly sandwiches and a veggie nugget salad.
District employees tasted the new menu, Wednesday, and they approved of the new offerings.
“We’re having a vegan lentil primavera pasta next year in high schools, so coming from sloppy Joe to vegan lentil pasta is a big step,” Port said.
Most of the new lunches were chosen by nearly 200 students who tasted potential menu items and judged each of them at an event held in January.
