FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - The first day of school is quickly approaching, and some Broward County students will be hitting the books sooner than others.

It’s back to school for students at four year-round schools in Broward County, Wednesday, and the superintendent was on hand to make sure the first day goes off with a good start. “We’re excited to start off a new school year,” said Broward School’s Superintendent Robert Runcie.

Runcie welcomed students and parents at Colbert Elementary School in Hollywood.

Teachers also prepared bulletin boards and syllabi for the new school year. “We have outstanding teachers here. They are extremely committed,” Runcie said. “They love our students. They deliver, day in and day out.”

The regular school year begins Aug. 22. “I am ready,” said one teacher decorating the hallway.

7News spoke with Runcie in his office to see what’s in store for students and their parents this new school year. “It’s gonna be a busy day,” he said. “People should take caution at school zones, slow down, plan for some extra time to get to work.”

For parents who have any questions, it is recommended to go to your child’s school or call the office.

As for getting to school via bus or pick up and drop off, Runcie said everyone should know where to go. “Parents, make sure they have all the right information. They know what the routes are, where the stops are,” he said. “They can call our transportation department. They can go on the district’s website.”

While students have been enjoying the summer, the county has been quite busy. “We have deployed over 50,000 computer devices in schools this year,” Runcie said.

Computer science has been expanded in all schools. More than 100 schools now have digital classrooms and dual language schools are also growing. “The students are receiving instruction in English, and then a target language of Spanish or French,” Runcie said.

Those are just a few of the many programs that were put into place that according to Runcie, will give every kid a fighting chance for a great future.
