MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. (WSVN) - Surveillance footage captured two clerks fighting back against an alleged thief in a Miami Gardens food market, Monday night, injuring him to the point that he was sent to the hospital.

Miami Gardens Police said the man was seen grabbing drinks on surveillance video and didn’t plan to pay for them. When he tried to leave, a clerk blocked the door, leading to a fight. Both men appear to break bottles over each other’s heads in the ensuing scuffle.

A second clerk is then seen approaching the fight with what looks like a bat. The alleged thief fell to the floor and another man appeared to step in.

The fight happened at the Five Star Market, at 16162 N.W. 27th Ave., in Bunche Park Plaza.

What happened next wasn’t captured on camera. Police said a clerk hit the man over the head with what they’re calling a “blunt object.” The man then tried to run away but didn’t get far.

Surveillance footage showed him on the sidewalk just outside the market, as one of the clerks stepped out of the store and waves to get the attention of police.

The man on the ground was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Police have not yet released his name or condition.

Tuesday night, the store clerks declined to comment on the incident.
