MIAMI (WSVN/AP) — President Obama made history, Wednesday, when he announced he shortened the terms for 214 prisoners — seven of them from Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Almost all the prisoners were serving time for nonviolent crimes related to cocaine, methamphetamine or other drugs, although a few were charged with firearms violations related to their drug activities. Almost all are men, though they represent a diverse cross-section of America geographically.

According to officials, seven of the prisoners pardoned by Obama were men from Miami-Dade and Broward counties who committed nonviolent crimes:


David Bell – Miami, FL

  • Sentenced to 262 months imprisonment and five years supervised release on Feb. 12, 2008 on drug-related charges.
  • Prison sentence commuted to expire on Dec. 1, 2016.

Jose Manuel Candelario – Miami, FL

  • Sentenced to life imprisonment and five years supervised release on April 21, 1994, but amended to 360 months imprisonment on May 17, 1999 on drug-related charges.
  • Prison sentence commuted to expire on Dec. 1, 2016.

Ralph Casas – North Miami Beach, FL

  • Sentenced to life imprisonment and five years supervised released on April 12, 2002, on drug-related charges.
  • Prison sentence commuted to a term of 292 months imprisonment.

Martin Brandon Moore – Fort Lauderdale, FL

  • Sentenced to life imprisonment plus 10 years supervised release on May 30, 3007 on drug-related charges.
  • Prison sentence commuted to a term of 180 months imprisonment.

Clarence Ward – Hollywood, FL

  • Sentenced to life imprisonment plus 10 years supervised release on Dec. 20, 2004 for drug related charges as well as possession of a firearm.
  • Prison sentence commuted to a term of 262 months imprisonment.

Samuel Reyes – Coral Springs, FL

  • Sentenced to 210 months imprisonment plus five years supervised release on Nov. 24, 2003 on drug-related charges.
  • Prison sentence commuted to expire on Dec. 1, 2016.

Wilson Henderson – Hollywood, FL

  • Sentenced to life imprisonment plus 60 months imprisonment and 10 years supervised released on drug-related charges, as well as use of a firearm during drug trafficking scheme, on Aug. 20, 1992.
  • Prison sentence commuted to expire on Dec. 1, 2016.
