NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - Miami Police responded to a car accident, Monday, where they discovered a 2-month-old baby in the back seat of a vehicle with an incoherent adult in the driver’s seat.

According to City of Miami Police, officers responded to an accident in the area of 12th Avenue and 20th Street in the City of Miami, at around 1 p.m., Monday.

Officers tweeted an image of an officer holding the child with the text, “@MiamiPD responded to accident at NW 12 Av & 20 St. 2 month old baby found w/ parents unconscious poss. OD on heroin.”

“Two of the individuals, including the driver in the vehicle, the adults were incoherent,” said Freddie Cruz of Miami Police. “We don’t know if they were under the influence of drugs, alcohol or maybe food poisoning, for that matter. That’s still under investigation.”

The mother of the child and a man who isn’t the child’s father were inside the car.

Miami Fire Rescue described the scene they discovered. “We found an adult female with a 2-month-old infant still in the car seat, laying on the ground,” said Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll. “As the rescuers started evaluating, both these people were unconscious. The child, who appeared to be somewhat awake, but very hot, very sweaty, were — all three — taken into our care by paramedics.”

“All I know is I received a phone call that the baby (inaudible), there was an accident, and I’m here on the baby’s behalf,” said Wilfredo, the baby’s godfather, who appeared outside a Miami Fire station. “As far as I know, the baby’s here, and the baby’s OK.”

“The two adults, male and female, were transported to the hospital,” said Carroll. “The baby was brought back here to the fire station for further evaluation, and Miami Police was contacted.”

Wilfredo said he visited the mother of the child in the hospital, and he is perplexed as to what exactly happened, and why the baby isn’t in the custody of either parent. “That’s the father right there, and the mother’s in the hospital,” he said. “She was too distraught to even talk about whatever had happened. I’m just glad that she’s OK, and the baby’s OK.”

The baby girl was taken by police and placed in the custody of state social workers with the Department of Children and Families. The baby has a status hearing to determine who will be taking care of her on Tuesday.
