NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - A 22-year-old man was shot and killed after police said he pulled a gun on an officer in Northwest Miami-Dade, Thursday afternoon.

Around 4 p.m., Thursday, police swarmed a Northwest Miami-Dade neighborhood near 76th Street and 20th Avenue.

Miami-Dade Police said their gang unit was on patrol in the neighborhood when they approached a group of people, ensuing an argument, which resulted in the shooting. The victim was later identified as 22-year-old Kentrill Carraway.

Devastated family members returned to the scene of the shooting and were outraged. “Give us a reason. What did he do?” said Rosaline Salter, Carraway’s cousin. “Why did you kill him?”

The young man’s father spoke out moments after the 22-year-old was pronounced dead. “All I want to know is why,” he said tearing up. “Why? It’s not right. They killed my son.”

A witness told 7News that he heard two or three shots. He also noted that the person who was shot was a young man. “I was walking, and I heard a couple shots,” said the witness. “I didn’t know where it came from, but I knew it was from my neighborhood, so as I walked, I got on the phone and called my house and made sure my kids are inside because it’s an ongoing thing. Always somebody’s getting shot. There’s kids with guns now. This is too much.”

Police said they were working on a narcotics investigation in the area at the time. According to police, the area is known for drug activity and when MDPD approached the group of men sitting under a tree, they said Carraway pulled out a gun. “Managed to [remove a] firearm from his waist band where the officer was forced to retrieve his firearm and did indeed shoot the male,” said Miami-Dade Police Detective Marjorie Eloi.

Carraway was taken away on a stretcher and rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital. His family arrived at the hospital shortly after. Carraway, however, did not survive.

Five other men were questioned at the scene. “Half of your job is to be hired and just shoot, pay and shoot?” said Eyette Burton, Carraway’s cousin. “That’s it?”

The investigation continued into Thursday night and officials said they retrieved a weapon. Carraway’s family said they will continue to press the department until their questions are answered. “Oh, we have questions,” said Clarence Glover, Carraway’s uncle. “What made them shoot him? Where’s the gun they claimed that he had? And we just want justice. Period. That’s the bottom line.”

Miami-Dade Police have identified the officer in this case as Detective George Eugene. Officials said he’s been on the force for nine years.
