NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - A deadly rollover wreck claimed a life in Northwest Miami-Dade.
The wreck happened near Northwest 58th Street and 72nd Avenue, at around 6:30 a.m., Friday.
Police said two vehicles were traveling southbound at a high rate of speed and, at some point, made contact causing both vehicles to hit a light pole.
“We don’t wanna say who was doing what because of the fact that it’s way too early to tell,” said Miami-Dade Police Det. Alvaro Zabaleta. “Were they trying to switch lanes? Was one car trying to switch lanes to the other? It’s hard to tell at this point. [It’s] too early in the investigation.”
A white vehicle then flipped over and the driver was ejected.
The driver died on the scene.
Police said the deceased driver was not wearing a seatbelt.
“In this particular case, perhaps, it may have kept that person inside of the vehicle,” Zabaleta said.
The second driver was unharmed and remained on the scene to cooperate with police.
The two cars could be seen mangled in the roadway as well as a yellow tarp covering a body.
Devastated family members could also be seen at the scene.
“We do know that, at one point, there was that impact to which was off-set in the rear passenger side, so that’s where the initial collision initiated,” Zabaleta said.
It remains unclear if the surviving driver will face any charges.
“These traffic fatalities, we normally don’t charge or file official charges immediately, because we allow the investigation to take its course and based on the info and based on the evidence we’re able to gather, working together with the State Attorney’s Office, if in fact it merits an arrest and it merits charges at that point, we’ll present those charges,” Zabaleta said.
Investigators have not revealed the identity of the victim and are working to gather surveillance video in the area.
Miami-Dade Police are now investigating.
