NORTH MIAMI, FLA. (WSVN) - A driver was killed in North Miami after, police said, their car crashed and caught fire.

The incident took place outside the Holy Cross Lutheran Church Christian Day School, near Northeast 135th Street and Sixth Avenue, just after 5 a.m., Sunday.

7News cameras captured pieces of a Mercedes-Benz sedan spread across the roadway.

Tires, as well as the car’s engine, could be seen charred in the middle of the road.

“I tried to open the door, but I can’t. The door was locked,” said Gustavus, a witness who tried to help.

The driver of the Mercedes did not survive the crash.

“I feel bad that I could not help,” Gustavus said.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze.

Officers temporarily shut down the roadway while crews worked to clear the scene.

It remains unclear what caused the crash.

Police said they do not know if the construction in the area had anything to do with the crash.
