DORAL, Fla. (WSVN) — A group of Miami mothers volunteered for a good cause on this Mother’s Day weekend, as they accepted donations for the victims of a devastating earthquake.
Volunteers raised awareness and gathered supplies for the people affected by the April 16 earthquake in Ecuador. They joined forces with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the Consulate General of Ecuador, collecting food, water and other essential supplies.
Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho expressed his gratitude to those dedicated people who came forward to lend a helping hand. "After we learned of this terrible destruction of this earthquake that hit Ecuador on April 16th, we went into action," he said. "We love the fact that we’re partnering with moms who care right here from Miami-Dade … and with a number of other corporate entities."
The quake has claimed at least 660 lives. Thousands of buildings, including homes and schools, were destroyed.
