WSVN — Giving an old space new life can really change the entire look of a home. On tonight’s Room for Improvement, our makeover maestro is doing just that.

Martin Amado: “OK, Rita, so tell me what’s going on with your living room.”

Rita: “Well, we’ve been living in this home for over 20 years, and my taste has always been somewhat monotone and maybe conservative, and after 20 years, I’m getting a little tired of seeing the same thing.”

Martin Amado: “So, you’re open to something new, obviously?”

Rita: “Absolutely.”

Martin Amado: “Anything that’s old eventually comes back in style. We see that in fashion and also in home decor. For example, gold was considered dated, and now it’s actually on trend. I’m going to make this work, mix it with some other metals and totally update Rita’s living room. Let’s get to work.”

Martin Amado: “Time to unload the car.”

Martin Amado: “The first thing I did was dress up the window. Before, it was completely bare, and now, by adding curtain panels only on the side, it helps to frame the view and adds a layer of elegance in the space.”

Martin Amado: “Now, let’s come up with a new furniture layout. But, before I do that, let’s get rid of the elements that don’t work.”

Martin Amado: “Finally, this humongous tree.”

Martin Amado: “This area rug is way to modern and the colors just don’t work.”

Martin Amado: “This is Rita’s original coffee table. I simply removed the wood panel that was in the center, and now we have a more modern version, and it didn’t cost us a dime.”

Martin Amado: “I’m adding two new end tables so that I can place lamps on them.”

Martin Amado: “Just a little detail to fill up the empty space without competing with anything else in the room.”

Martin Amado: “A grouping of three is always pleasing to the eye.”

Martin Amado: “I’m refreshing the look of the sofa with new toss pillows. I’m using two different patterns combined with a solid, but it all works because I’m keeping it within the same color family.”

Martin Amado: “Rita had these in another part of the house, and they look perfect here in the living room.”

Martin Amado: “Final touch, an orchid for this gigantic coffee table. And we’re done. Let’s go get Rita.”

Martin Amado: “One, two, three! Go ahead and open your eyes.”

Rita: “Oh, my God! It’s fantastic! It’s beautiful! I’m going to cry! It is beautiful!”

Martin Amado: “Thanks for contacting me and sending that e-mail, and to your husband as well. To all the viewers at home, we thank you for watching, and we’ll see you next time on another…”

Rita: “Room for Improvement.”

Martin Amado: “That’s right!”
