(CNN) — Republican presidential candidates launched into an in-depth debate on drug use Wednesday night, with Florida Gov. Jeb Bush saying that as a young man he smoked pot. "So 40 years ago I smoked marijuana and I admit it. I’m sure that other people might have done it and may not want to say it in front of 25 million people. My mom’s not happy that I just did," Bush said, to laughter in the audience. Bush’s campaign followed up with a tweet saying "Sorry Mom," shortly thereafter.

Carly Fiorina said she opposed the legalization of marijuana and described losing her step daughter to addiction. Only Sen. Rand Paul favored laxer drug laws, arguing the current system has hurt disadvantaged children. "I think that the war on drugs has had a racial outcome and really has been something that has damaged our inner cities," Paul said. "Not only do the drugs damage them, we damage them again by incarcerating them and then preventing them from getting employment over time."
