WSVN — Plants add a nice ambiance in any home but most of us don’t have the time or patience to care for them. Our makeover maestro has the perfect solution in tonight’s ‘Room for Improvement’.
Martin Amado: “It’s always nice to add a touch of greenery in your home decor, but what if we can take those plants and turn them into a beautiful wall installation at the same time? It’s the perfect spring project on today’s ‘Room for Improvement’ and I promise you, it doesn’t require a green thumb.”
Martin Amado: “The idea is to take these beautiful glass spheres that come in many different shapes and sizes and plant succulents inside. They’re obviously low maintenance.”
Martin Amado: “Once we’re done planting, we’re going to hang them from a decorative rod at different levels.”
Martin Amado: “You can buy these beauties at floral shops or even discount department stores. And, the prices vary depending on the size.”
Martin Amado: “You can find the succulents, in many textures at any garden store.”
Martin Amado: “We begin first by adding a layer of small river rock at the bottom to help with drainage and then we cover that with potting soil.”
Martin Amado: “We’re working with a small opening so I find it best to use a plastic spoon to place the dirt.”
Martin Amado: “Just build up the dirt until it’s flush with the opening to place the plant.”
Martin Amado: “By placing the round sphere inside a pot, it stabilizes it and I can work with it better.”
Martin Amado: “If your sphere is large enough, you can plant multiples and it looks great with all the contrasting textures of leaves.”
Martin Amado: “As a decorative cover to hide the dirt, I’m using Spanish moss and the same river rocks I placed on the bottom.”
Martin Amado: “For hard to reach areas in the back, use a long hook or even just a long pencil.”
Martin Amado: “Once you’re done, go ahead and mist the entire terrarium with water which also helps to remove some of the dirt that might have gotten on the plants.”
Martin Amado: “Beautiful! One down! Like, four more to go!”
Martin Amado: “In addition to succulents, you can also use air plants. They go right inside, don’t require any soil and they get all their nutrients from the air.”
Martin Amado: “I’m still using some gravel as a decorative base for the air plants.”
Martin Amado: “We’re done planting. It looks awesome! Now, for some of the spheres that don’t have anything to hang them with, I’m simply using some twine.”
Martin Amado: “Works of art! Let’s go place them inside.”
Martin Amado: “I love the entire grouping. Now, these work best in indirect lighting and mist them with water once a week and you’re good to go. An instant, beautiful garden as part of your home decor. Until next time, I’m Martin Amado for 7News.”
