NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) — Florida Power & Light worked with several volunteers to beautify a local elementary school.
FPL and City Year Miami made some improvements to Van E. Blanton Elementary.
Volunteers got their hands dirty landscaping and painting murals on the walls of the school.
Workers are also working in the memory of King Carter, a 6-year-old student who was killed just a block away from the school in February. "Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago and one of our very own bulldogs, his life was taken," said principal Tangela Goa. "As a gesture, just to remember him and his spirit, part of this project is in remembrance of him and what he brought to our school because he was a gentle giant with his spirit."
Carter was shot at Northwest 104th Street and 12th Avenue when he was walking to get some candy. Three teenagers involved in the shooting have been charged with second degree murder.
