NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) — Crews have extinguished a brushfire that sparked in the Everglades near the Miami-Dade/Broward county line Friday afternoon, but they are concerned weekend thunderstorms might pose a risk of additional blazes in the area.

According to the Florida Forest Service, the blaze sparked several miles west of the intersection of U.S. 27 and Krome Avenue, near Pines Boulevard, spreading approximately 100 acres across Northwest Miami-Dade and Southwest Broward County.

Officials said no roadways or buildings were threatened.

The Florida Forest Service deployed a large vehicle in this remote area to clear brush and trees so the fire has nowhere to grow. Officials said the smoke blew across U.S. 27, but crews were able to contain the blaze by early evening.

Investigators said the blaze may have been caused by lightning, as was the case with a brushfire that sparked in Alligator Alley in West Broward on Wednesday.

Forestry officials said they will be back Saturday morning to continue monitoring the area.
