The Boys & Girls Club is more than just a place to hang out after school it’s where kids can learn, create and have fun this summer. 7’s Lynn Martinez shows us in today’s Parent to Parent.
WSVN — From keeping their brains active to keeping their bodies fit, there isn’t a dull moment for kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Broward County.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County President Brian Quail: “We’re there to serve kids who need us most.”
The organization has been a staple in Broward County for nearly 50 years serving thousands of kids mostly from single parent households.
Brian Quail: “So, we become really a support in a system to people who need us.”
And with so many families relying on the Boys & Girls Club throughout the year, their summer program is no exception. First and foremost, education is a priority.
Senior Club Director Curtis Shoffner: “Children during the summer months tend to forget the things that they’ve learned in the school year.”
So they continue to concentrate on reading, math and science.
However, there’s always time for fun and games. Kids can build up a sweat in the gym. Playing flag football, while learning what it’s like to be part of a team. Or they can try their hand at art class, like 9-year-old Danica, who likes to help the teacher.
Danica Hightower: “I help her get started with the class.”
Brian Quail: “It’s providing them with opportunities for creativity, to express themselves, to gain self worth.”
Of course, with all this activity they are sure to build up an appetite and each child is provided a hot meal.
Curtis Shoffner: “They also get free snacks and free lunch.”
That’s why so many kids call this place their second home.
Brian Quail: “This is an unbelievable opportunity for them to experience caring, love, acceptance.”
And to enjoy their time just being a kid.
Marques Thompson: “Just be a good kid and you’ll have a great time, all the time.”
The summer program runs 10 weeks starting in June. Kids six through 18 are welcome.
