WSVN — We live in a fast-paced world but taking your time in the kitchen with an old fashioned tradition is bringing kids and their parents closer. 7’s Lynn Martinez shows us in today’s Parent to Parent.
From flour to the dough, these families are learning how to make bread from scratch.
Claude Juneau: “Four a.m. in the morning we start and it’s a long process”
Claude Juneau is the owner of Great Harvest Bread Company in North Miami. He said some of his best memories with his two daughters were spent baking.
Claude Juneau: “As they will grow they will need to do these simple things.”
Now he offers his experience to families who want to learn how to bake bread together. First, they get a tour of the bakery’s kitchen, where all the action takes place.
Claude Juneau: “We even grind the wheat in the back, we have a mill room, so we do our own flour.”
Then, it’s time to get their hands dirty. Claude teaches them how to knead the dough.
This part can be challenging, so it does take some practice. Claude says the process can really help boost a child’s confidence.
Alanah Alphonse: “I thought it was really cool. I never thought I’d be able to knead bread.”
Nine-year-old Alanah came here with her mom.
Alanah Alphonse: “How they make it, how they’re supposed to weigh it, cut it, what they use to mix it and bake it.”
Claude said these days, kids are used to pre-made food but making the bread themselves gives them a sense of tradition.
Claude Juneau: “You work, you mix things together, then you put that in the oven and then you get a result and you eat it.”
Twelve-year-old Mia felt a proud as she carefully designed her loaf.
Mia Amezola: “I enjoy seeing the things that I make, work out well.”
Trinity and her mom enjoyed the baking and bonding time and plan to continue the ritual at home.
Nancy Nilson: “She opens up more, when she’s not thinking about the conversation we’re having.”
Trinity: “I thought it was really fun personally.”
When the final product comes out of the oven, it’s rewarding for all.
Claude Juneau: “That’s the best time when you see them what they did and see that at the end, they could do it.”
Lynn Martinez: Claude will be hosting another baking memories class for kids and their parents on Sunday, Sept. 14.
