MIAMI (AP) — An annual conference on fighting money laundering that draws bankers, government regulators and lawyers from around the world begins in Miami.
The three-day gathering sponsored by the Florida International Bankers Association gets started Monday at a downtown hotel. Speakers include senior banking executives, U.S. Treasury Department officials and many others.
It comes as the U.S. is cracking down on money laundering using high-end Miami real estate and electronic devices such as cellphones that are bought with crime-related money and shipped overseas.
Sessions will be held on those topics as well as the impact of the new U.S.-Cuba relationship, relaxation of Iran sanctions, terrorist financing and how virtual currencies such as bitcoin are used to launder cash by drug cartels and other criminal groups.
