DAVIE, Fla. (WSVN) — One person was killed and three people were injured after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 75 near Sheridan Street, early Saturday.
The head-on collision occurred when a red Porsche convertible traveling south in the northbound lanes when it collided with a gray SUV, at around 5 a.m. "Anytime there’s a head-on collision, someone going the wrong way, it’s a very violent collision," said Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Mark Wysocky.
Investigators said the driver of the sports car, whom they identified as 23-year-old Jenri Ruiz, was killed on impact. "The deceased person was still in the vehicle," said Wysocky .
Officials said Ruiz’s 27-year-old passenger was critically injured. The two occupants of the SUV, Abel and Sandra Soriano, sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.
They were taken to Broward Health Medical Center.
Troopers shut down the northbound lanes of I-75 near Sheridan Street for hours as officials took measurements and interviewed witnesses.
Authorities are trying to figure out why the Porsche was going the wrong way. "We don’t have a cause at this time," he said. "It is too early to tell whether it was alcohol-related. In the past, several of these crashes have been alcohol-related."
Investigators said it could take months to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the deadly crash.
