DEERFIELD BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - A large group of Deerfield Beach High School students marched in support of those affected by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.
7Skyforce flew over the march where students were seen with signs as they made the trek towards Stoneman Douglas High School. The march began at Deerfield Beach High School.
Deerfield Beach High staff said they realized there was a walk-out planned, so they allowed those marching to go out the back exit of the school. They also emphasized the students’ safety and assigned security guards to walk with the group.
“We’re excited as a school to do a walk to [Stoneman] Douglas to support our school and everybody around us to keep us safe,” said a student.
Students said they had a message for lawmakers regarding guns and schools.
“Congressmen, if you’re watching this, I promise you: me and my peers, once we’re 18, you are out of there. That’s not a threat – that’s a promise,” said one student.
“How many more shootings is it gonna take for us to notice we need a change?” asked another student. “How many more kids is it gonna take to get killed?
Despite the sun and the distance, one student said the walk was necessary.
“This was not a fun walk. We’re doing this to make a statement,” said another student. “We don’t want it to happen anywhere.”
“Guns are not a school supply,” said another student.
“This happened at one of the safest schools in Broward,” said a student. “Imagine where else this could happen.”
Faculty members and parents met students at the school to congratulate the students and offer their support.
The 11-14 mile walk took about four hours.
Other high school students from Boca Raton also walked from their school to Stoneman Douglas to show their support. When they arrived, many were overcome with emotion.
