Japan and Mexico, two very different countries with two very different cuisine. A restaurant in the 954 is serving up both under one roof. Check out this place where tempura and tacos deliciously co-exist…

Food fusion’s a big thing these days, but at Viva Tokyo in Oakland Park, you chow down on either Mexican or Japanese. If you think that’s a strange partnership, you’re not alone…

Jade: “No, actually everybody told me told me that I was crazy. Who in the world in their right mind would make a restaurant Japanese and Mexican?”

It may sound odd — but it works…

Cristina Ardon: “It’s different than a lot of places I’ve been to. I just ate sushi while listening to Spanish music, which is really interesting.”

Not only does Viva Tokyo make great food. It stops that conflict between hungry couples…

Jade: “If you go out to eat, you’re always arguing about, ‘Where do we go? Do we do this? Do we do that?’ So I like seeing at one table some people are enjoying their Mexican cooked food and then the other side enjoying their sushi.”

Depending on your mood, you can chow down on a steak burrito with peppers, tomatoes and onions or some fish tacos topped with spicy mayo. Of course, you might be itching to use your chop sticks. That can be easily arranged with the Lobster Feast or the Viva Tokyo roll…

Jade: “We put tempura shrimp, tuna in the middle and asparagus, then it’s made into a sushi roll and then on top, we just split the green tomatillo and avocado sauce to spice it up a little bit.”

To be fair, there are a few occasions when East meets West. Check out the spicy tuna burrito…

Jade: “We put field greens, the spicy tuna — which is marinated with a kimchi and honey.”

You can go traditional if you want. The kitchen can whip you up an hibachi meal in no time…

It’s all good at Viva Tokyo, no matter which part of the world appeals to your appetite…

Jade: “The food here it tastes so good and so fresh and I think that’s what keeps them coming back.”
