People have been sipping sake for a long, long time. Now a restaurant in Fort Lauderdale is serving up the Japanese rice wine in a whole new way. Forget everything you think you know and get ready for a sake surprise.

The Poke House in Fort Lauderdale is offering something you’ve probably never tasted before.

Memphis Garrett: “We are one of the first places in the country to carry sake on draft.”

From the tap, to the carafe, to the cup, this is new brew.

Memphis Garrett: “It just gives us the ability to infuse massive amounts of it and get a profile that’s amazing, that you can’t do in a batched bottle.”

Traditional sake pours from the tap, and that’s just the start.

Memphis Grantt: “So we’re infusing sake. We’re infusing this sake for two weeks at a time with different things like charred pineapple, with lemons, with peppers — with so many different items that we’re literally taking it to the next level.”

Not every infusion idea is a success. That’s not a problem in the Poke House.

Memphis Grantt: “You know if it’s not good, all good. We’re gonna make it good the next time and kind of tweak it so it’s perfect, so when our guests come in, they can have something they’ve never had before.”

Poke might be new to you as well. Don’t worry — you’re not alone.

Customer: “I’m a Poke virgin, so I didn’t know what to expect, but I’m very impressed.”

Here’s the breakdown on this Hawaiian delight: raw fish is marinated in a sauce of your choice; some extras, like house-made kimchi, are added; rice goes in a bowl along with some toppings; next, the fish; then more toppings and there’s your Poke bowl.

Memphis Grantt: “We want to bring a fast fresh casual atmosphere to the Floridians, and with great food and a great time.”

You can add great sake from the tap to that list.

As far as Eric’s concerned, it’s mission accomplished…

Eric: “I’m actually really surprised, it’s pretty delicious. I’ve been to Japan three times and this is pretty killer, so I’m pumped to be here.”
