The Miami Heat is gearing up for the season, and they can’t do it without a dance squad to back them up. Deco’s two-stepping expert Chris Van Vliet checked out the Heat dancer auditions at the AAA.

I am no meteorologist, but I can tell you it was all Heat this weekend, and I’m not talking about the weather. On Sunday, the Miami Heat held auditions for the hottest dance team in pro sports.

The heat is on and the pressure is high.

Natalia Gonzalez, Heat Dancers manager: “There will be three rounds consisting of different things: freestyle, a jazz funk round and a Miami-based choreography round.”

The Miami Heat is searching for the most talented, energetic and best dancers in town. Dozens of girls took the first step to be a Heat dancer by auditioning at the American Airlines Arena on Sunday.

Fabiana Bracho: “I come from a small family, my mom, my grandma and me, so really the sisterhood, having family, people who support you and back you up. That’s the main reason why I really want this.”

For others, it’s about staying part of that family. Just because you made the team last year doesn’t guarantee you a spot this year.

Jeanelle Gomez: “Being a Heat dancer is not just dancing. It’s not just what you do on the court. There’s so much more than that. There’s so much outside of the court, in the community.”

Lindsey Murray: “Passion is very strong, and when you have a strong passion for something, you can do anything you put your mind to.”

Lindsey Murray was a Heat dancer last season, but Sunday’s court challenge is nothing compared to what she recently went through.

She was diagnosed with cancer. Doctors found a tumor the size of a grapefruit behind her rib cage.

Lindsey Murray: “When you encounter something that I went through, you find it in you to push through and find the fighter in you and the strength in you you didn’t know you had.”

Now she continues to push through this choreography and hopes to be part of the team for a second year.

Natalia Gonzalez: “I look for, definitely, personality, somebody who engages me, somebody who makes eye contact with me and somebody who’s just having fun.”

Forty dancers from this audition went on to Heat Dancer Bootcamp, which started Monday. From there, 25 girls will make the team.

The final auditions are this Friday night at the AAA. That’s when the 2016-2017 Heat dance team will officially be announced.
