(WSVN) - Imagine this — Mark Wahlberg covered in oil. That’s what happens in the new film “Deepwater Horizon.”

Deco sat down with the stars of the movie — and went deep — talking about the real life heroes behind the story.

The Deepwater Horizon explosion caused the worst oil spill in American history.

Now the accident is the basis of a new movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Kate Hudson.

The disaster caused an environmental catastrophe — but the film focuses on the human impact.

Mark Wahlberg: “Like a lot of people now seeing the movie, I didn’t realize that it was 11 people lost their lives.”

Mark plays Mike Williams — an electrician working on the rig when the unthinkable happens.

Mark Wahlberg: “These are the kind of stories that I gravitate towards and, you know, to be able to play a guy like Mike, who was this ordinary guy doing some pretty incredible things under some pretty horrific circumstances.”

Kate Hudson plays Mike’s wife Felicia, who finds out about the accident as it’s happening.

Kate Hudson (as Felicia Williams): “Mike, what is that? Is everything ok?”

Mark Wahlberg (as Mike Williams): “I’ll call you back, call you back…”

Kate Hudson: “Felicia really represents all of the families that, when the accident happened on Deepwater, they had no idea what was going on. They were really left in the dark.”

Kate stars with the man she considers her father — Kurt Russell.

It’s the first time they’ve appeared in a film together.

Kate Hudson: “Super fun working with dad.”

John Malkovich (as Vidrine): “We all work very hard to ensure those moving parts are functioning as a means so they’re a profit for all of us.”

Russell’s character goes head-to-head with a BP executive, played by John Malkovich.

Kurt says the film’s about regular people making impossible decisions.

Kurt Russell: “They’re just people who go to work like we do. Their’s happens to be in 21 day shifts on a rig that they’re just working on when all hell breaks loose.”

The effects of the spill are ongoing, for the environment and for the people who lived through the disaster.

Kurt Russell: “It’s a little more difficult than you think, getting that oil out of the ground into your car and into airplanes and into your houses. And when it goes south, there’s just gonna be people dealing with an absolute living hell.”

Kurt Russell (as Jimmy Harrell): “Gotta get to the lifeboats right now!”

“Deepwater Horizon” is in theaters Friday.
