When you think of Israeli cuisine — falafel, hummus and pita bread come to mind. Pizza isn’t exactly high on the list of Middle Eastern delights … but that’s about to change, if a new SoFlo eatery has anything to say about it.
Big Apple Pizza is a popular chain in Israel. They’ve opened their latest store far from their homeland — on State Road 7 in Hollywood.
Dave Matthews, co-owner of Big Apple Pizza: “It’s a New York-style pizza, but it is kosher, so we have to stay to non-meat products and vegetable products.”
For those not exactly sure what kosher means, let dave break it down…
Dave Matthews: “It really means two things. Number one, we have somebody here to make sure that we’re putting in kosher ingredients. Kosher really means that you can’t mix dairy and meat together.”
So forget about that large sausage and pepperoni pie. Other than that, it’s mighty good eating.
Dave Matthews: “We make sure the pizza’s got that crunch on the bottom when you cut through it, you can hear it when you bite into it, you can feel it. It’s a real, real quality pizza.”
The place has some very interesting offerings…
Dave Matthews: “Our specialty pie, that is our number one seller in Israel and has become a big seller here, is pizza with green olives. A lot of people here in the United States are not used to that on a pizza.”
Another vegetable can make a surprise appearance on your pie…
Dave Matthews: “We also do a corn pizza where we put corn on a pizza and that’s also very popular.”
A mighty Greek salad is another specialty of the house, so is penne in pink sauce…
Dave Matthews: “But we have our coffee slushy, which is really the big one that everyone enjoys. It’s coffee. It’s cold and it’s good.”
If you feel like dropping by on the weekend, you better plan your visit.
Dave Matthews: “We’re open Sunday through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays we close early. We close at 4 p.m. because of the Jewish shabbat. On Saturday nights, we open about an hour and a half after sunset.”
Anytime you get to Big Apple Pizza, you’ll be one happy foodie.
