Some Johnny Depp fans felt like they’d gone through the looking glass and down the rabbit hole, all at once! That’s because they came face to face with the SoFlo star, and at first they didn’t have any idea.

Mia Wasikowska (as Alice): “What’s the matter?”

Michael Sheen (as White Rabbit): “The Hatter’s the matter.”

Mia Wasikowska (as Alice): “The Hatter is my truest friend, if he is in need, I will help him.”

Oh no! The Mad Hatter is trouble!

Anne Hathaway (as White Queen): “Hatter is counting on you.”

And in the upcoming movie “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” Alice is on a mission to save him.

Mia Wasikowska (as Alice): “Hold on, everyone.”

Johnny Depp (as Mad Hatter): “I don’t want to hold on!”

The Mad Hatter, who’s played by actor Johnny Depp, doesn’t just magically tackle the role. He’s also a bit of a prankster!

Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter): “Why are you looking at me like that?”

Little girl at Disneyland: “Ahhh!”

Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter): “Oh!”

Yup, that’s Johnny Depp in his full Mad Hatter costume from the movie.

Johnny surpassed fans with an interactive billboard at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.

Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter): “Pssst.”

Female guest at Disneyland: “Whoa! My favorite movie ever.”

Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter): “What is your name, miss?”

Female guest at Disneyland: “Heather.”

Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter): “Heather?”

Female guest at Disneyland: “What the [expletive].”

At first, people thought it was just a photo of his character, until Johnny started winking and talking back.

The actor, who sat in a studio, was live-streamed to a screen in the park.  A separate camera captured the people who came to look at the billboard.

Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter): “Ouch!”

Guest at Disneyland: “What?”

Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter): “Hello!”

Guest at Disneyland: “Hello? Are you the Mad Hatter?”

Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter): “My name is Had Matter.”

He seemed to scare and delight on-lookers, asking names and sneezing bubbles!

Disney calls the interactive promotion good, clean, viral marketing fun.

“Alice Through the Looking Glass” hits theaters May 27.
