Set your phasers to stun because “Star Trek Beyond” is set to stun Trekkies.
In “Star Trek Beyond,” Captain Kirk, played by Chris Pine, and his crew must stop the evil dictator Krall from gaining power.
Chris Pine: “We have an antagonist who is not into the Federation or into unity — who thinks strength comes from being selfish.”
After the Enterprise is destroyed, the crew realizes they may be from different parts of the universe — but they’re still a family.
Chris Pine: “What Kirk finds and supports in this is that the idea is the people. What he is fighting for are the people next to him.”
As a writer and one of the movie’s stars — Simon Pegg decided that the characters should show a different side of themselves.
Simon Pegg: “We wanted the film to be an ensemble piece, we wanted to deal with the whole crew and how they are with each other, as opposed to lean too heavily on Spock and Kirk, which is what has happened before.”
“Star Trek Beyond” looks beyond what you think you know about characters like Dr. McCoy played by Karl Urban.
Karl Urban: “For me, personally, I feel like this is the most well rounded, defined version of the character that I’ve had the opportunity to play.”
And turns out there is a softer side of Spock, played by Zachary Quinto.
Zachary Quinto: “Spock — in particular — is at a little bit of a crossroads at the beginning of this film — pulled between his allegiance to Starfleet and the Federation and also, his sense of obligation to rebuild New Vulcan.”
And, John Cho’s character Sulu bravely goes where no Star Trek movie has gone before.
John Cho: “For your viewers Sulu is gay.”
While news of Sulu’s love life made headlines for a little bit — it’s not the focus of the movie or even the character.
John Cho: “I love the handling of it and the fact that it’s just is nothing in the film. It’s a small moment and if you choose to have a beef with it, you can, but no one in the movie does.”
Warp speed ahead — “Star Trek Beyond” is in theaters Friday.
