May is a cool month… it starts with Mother’s Day and ends with Memorial Day weekend. What makes it even cooler — we celebrate our favorite comfort food. May is National Burger Month! Deco found a couple of SoFlo haunts that have boldly taken the patty where it’s never gone before…

Michael Mina 74 at the Fontainebleau on SoBe is totally down with Burger Month…

Maykel Escalona: “We have an offering that will fill all the palates for everyone.”

Check out their dry-aged steak burger with double-smoked bacon and cheese sauce. It also comes with peanut butter crunch sauce on top.

Maykel Escalona: “We do use real peanut butter on the burger. Actually, it goes pasted on the bun.”

And these little babies are the new lamb sliders. They’re little, but a lot of fancy stuff goes into them.

Two lamb patties, fresh grilled foie gras, pineapple and pico peppers piled on brioche buns with au jus micro greens in vinaigrette and plated with pickled veggies. And speaking of veggies…

You don’t even need to eat meat to enjoy Burger Month — check out their vegetable mille-feuille.

Maykel Escalona: “It’s a French term that’s used for pastries. We took that and made it into the vegetable burger.”

Meanwhile, at Wild Sea Oyster Bar & Grille in Fort Lauderdale, the old favorite is getting spun in lots of new ways.

Toby Joseph, chef: “There’s a variety of different things that we have to keep up with, you know, the clientle that wants something different.”

That explains the soft shell crab BLT.

A toasted bun with remoulade sauce cradles the crab, heirloom tomato slices, bacon, lettuce and onion…

The short rib burger is a meat eater’s dream.

Toby Joseph: “With braised pork belly, and then I do a pickled green tomato and it is on a homemade — ready? — English muffin.”

Smoked blue cheese, watercress and crispy rutabaga complete the package.

The brisket burger, with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and homemade pickle completes the trifecta…

The folks here believe their eatery is the only place to celebrate Burger Month…

Toby Joseph: “But if they want the best burger– they’re coming here.”

That’s a sentiment echoed by very satisfied customers…

Customer: “It’s actually the best burger I probably ever had.”
