Your favorite barbers are back with clippers in hand. "Barbershop: The Next Cut" mixes humor with headlines. This star-studded comedy is the latest installment in the "Barbershop" movie series.
Time to make an appointment for "Barbershop: The Next Cut." The movie is the newest installment to this franchise.
Over the years, the shop and the stars have changed a little bit, but something that’s stayed the same is Calvin, played by Ice Cube.
Ice Cube: "We are a unisex shop now. The recession in 2008 really hit us and we had to pair up with the beauty shop next door, so we knocked that wall out, and now we have a lot of new different characters in the barbershop. Common, we have Nicki Minaj, we have Deon Cole, we have J. B. Smoove."
As Terry, Eve was used to being the only girl in the shop.
Eve: "Terry is married, she has a stepkid, she has a child. And she’s also still in the shop, but kinda doing her own thing. She is building a business outside of the shop. She has evolved a lot."
But now Angie, played by Regina Hall, and her team have joined the boys.
Regina Hall: "Angie, this is actually her first time in the shop. She had to merge her business with Calvin’s, she’s trying to stay afloat and keep the girls in order and keep peace in the shop."
Nicki Minaj joins the girls and Common as Rashad. She’s cutting hair with the guys and keeping an eye on J.D., played by Anthony Anderson.
Common: "I’m being a good father, I’m trying take care and trying to bring the community together so we can change this violence. He’s exploiting the community."
Anthony Anderson: "Hold on — I’m employing characters from the community."
Common: "And exploiting them. Y’all not even paying them right."
Anthony Anderson: "OK, you got me on that."
"The Next Cut" is definitely a comedy, but it does have elements ripped from the headlines.
Ice Cube: "I think we have a pretty good movie that is really dealing with what is going on on the streets of Chicago. It’s a great comedy with heart."
"Barbershop: The Next Cut" opens in theaters Friday, April 15.
