GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — No. 18 Florida could have quarterback Luke Del Rio back on the field against LSU on Saturday.
Del Rio missed the last two games with a sprained left knee. The Gators (4-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) went 1-1 without him.
Coach Jim McElwain says Del Rio “had kind of been targeting” a return against the Tigers (3-2, 2-1). He adds that Del Rio’s “mindset is he’s going to play. And that’s good, that’s what you want.”
Del Rio has completed 61 percent of his passes for 762 yards, with six touchdowns and two interceptions. Former Purdue starter Austin Appleby filled in for him, throwing three TDs and a pick.
Also Monday, McElwain said the Gators could be without their entire starting defensive line. Defensive end Jordan Sherit (leg) and defensive tackle Joey Ivie (thumb) will miss several weeks. Defensive tackle Caleb Brantley (finger) and defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. (leg) also could be sidelined against LSU.
