NEW YORK (AP) — Mets outfielder Juan Lagares is expected to miss six weeks because of a sprained left thumb that needs surgery.

New York put the former Gold Glove winner on the 15-day disabled list before playing Colorado on Friday night. Outfielder Brandon Nimmo was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Lagares first hurt his thumb making a diving catch on June 4 in Miami. He played through the injury until going on the DL on June 16.

Lagares returned on July 2, batting just .160 with two RBIs in 22 games. He is hitting .243 overall with three home runs and eight RBIs.

“He’s going to need to get his thumb repaired,” manager Terry Collins said. “I don’t know when that’ll happen, but they went through all the records and he is just unable to play the way Juan needs to play, so they need to get it fixed.”

The 23-year-old Nimmo made his major league debut last month. He spent three weeks with the Mets, hitting .235 with one homer and four RBIs before going back to the minors.
