TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State quarterback Sean Maguire will have ankle surgery next week and is expected to miss spring practice.
Maguire fractured his left ankle during the Seminoles’ 38-24 loss to Houston in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 31.
The Tallahassee Democrat first reported the fracture and surgery, which were confirmed to The Associated Press by people connected to the team. They provided the information on condition of anonymity due to school medical policy.
Maguire was injured during the first quarter and carted to the locker room. He was out for two series and returned with his ankle and foot heavily bandaged. Maguire and coach Jimbo Fisher said after the game that X-rays revealed a badly sprained ankle.
It wasn’t until the team returned to campus and further tests were done that the injury was revealed to be more severe. Maguire ended up completing 22 of 45 passes for 392 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions in the loss.
Maguire started seven games for the Seminoles (10-3) in the past two years. He played in eight games this season, starting five, and completed 59.3 percent of his passes with 11 touchdowns and six interceptions.
J.J. Cosentino, who played in two games this past season, scout-team QB Deondre Francois and early enrollee Malik Henry will get most snaps in the spring.
Florida State’s spring game will be played April 9. It will be in Orlando because of renovations at Doak Campbell Stadium. The Seminoles’ opener next season will be on Sept. 5 against Mississippi in Orlando.
