CENTREVILLE, Ala. (AP) — The body of an unidentified teen hitchhiker who died 55 years ago in Alabama is being exhumed.

AL.com (http://bit.ly/1YclEzj ) reports that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is providing money to pay for the exhumation of the body to identify him.

Bibb County sheriff’s spokesman Kevin Lawrence says the teen died in 1961. He says the teen had been picked up by a hitchhiker, but later died after the vehicle crashed.

The driver, who survived, told investigators that the boy had said he ran away from home after his parents separated.

Lawrence says the teen’s remains will be taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Montgomery to obtain DNA samples. Afterward, the body will be reburied in the Centreville Cemetery.
