HARRISONBURG, Va. (WSVN) — A couple in Virginia refused to tip their waitress — and then insulted her with a racist written remark — due to her Latin ethnicity.
According to CNN, 18-year-old Sadie Elledge said she immediately felt uncomfortable when a couple sat down to eat at Jess’ Lunch in downtown Harrisonburg, last week.
After she rang up the couple for two gyros, drinks and a Greek salad, they quickly signed the receipt and darted out of the restaurant.
While customers don’t always tip their server, what this couple wrote down stunned her — “We only tip citizens.”
Elledge may be of Mexican and Honduran descent, but she was born in the United States (and she is definitely just as “American” as the ignorant couple she served).
“They wouldn’t talk to me. They would just nod their heads,” Elledge told CNN affiliate WHSV. “It doesn’t really matter if I’m Hispanic or American, whatever you want to call it, I’m still a person, you should still treat me with respect.”
When local residents heard about the story, they came together to send her an encouraging note. And with the note? A substantial tip.
