DERBY, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut city is saying goodbye to its last cobblestone street, but not everyone is happy about it.
Derby Mayor Anita Dugatto said the cobblestone, or “Belgian block,” portion of Caroline Street will be removed due to “safety reasons.”
She tells the New Haven Register that the road is uneven, gets dangerously slick when it rains or snows, and damages city snow plows and private vehicles. Officials say residents have been complaining for years.
Dugatto said the stones will be re-used, likely around benches downtown.
Resident Markanthony Izzo was asked by Duggato to produce a video of the cobblestones’ removal. He refused. He says digging up the cobblestones “is the destruction of yet another historical link to Derby’s past.”
