SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) — The Shawano-Menominee County Health Department is investigating an outbreak of an infectious disease called shigella (shih-GEL’-ah).

The disease carries flu-like symptoms and has been connected to several day care centers in Shawano and Hillcrest Primary School.

Health officer Jaime Bodden says shigella is very contagious and those who become ill should stay home to avoid spreading it. The disease usually lasts five to seven days.

Handwashing and other hygiene measures can stop its spread.
