NEAR JUPITER, Fla. (WSVN) — A pair of teenagers are being hailed heroes after a daring rescue at sea.

Over the weekend police received a distress call about two kayakers caught in the surf, near Jupiter. However, by the time the marine unit got to the scene, a rescue mission was already underway.

"We were planning on just going out there and fishing and trying to catch some dolphin and stuff."

According to the two teens, they were heading out for a fishing trip off the coast of Jupiter, when they came across two struggling kayakers. "When we got out there we saw it was real rough, just kept on going and when we saw those people we tried to help them."

When the teens were pulling the kayakers aboard their small boat, a ten foot wave capsized them. Fortunately the police marine unit arrived in time to pull everyone from the water.

Officials said everyone made it back on dry land without sustaining any injuries, and though the teens needed an assist, they were the real heroes.

"A big part was losing the boat but that’s just material things, you know. Glad everyone’s OK."

The local marine unit also said the kayakers might not have survived if the teens hadn’t come to their aid.

Lifeguards encourage everyone to monitor conditions before heading out on the water.
