Sewing Classes

WSVN — It's a new pattern for fashionable women on a budget, get a pattern and make your own haute looks!

At Sassy BB Design Store in Fort Lauderdale sewing classes are so popular these days.

Kerry Szymanski: "Our sewing lessons are slammed. The economy is really bad right now, so a lot of people are coming in and learning to sew to help save money on clothing and on alterations."

Kerry, a fashion professor from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, offers sewing classes six days a week at the store.

She supplies the machines, and you'll learn all the basics of sewing. From reading a pattern, choosing fabric to alterations.

Kerry Szymanski: "Within four hours, we can teach you how to hem, how to use a sewing machine, make aprons."

Then you can start advancing.

Kerry Szymanski: "Within six to eight hours, we'll get you to make skirts, and with our skirt projects, you can learn how to make a skirt for the beach, for work and really take off from there."

Jennifer Gatins is now making her own clothes for a fraction of what they would cost in the store. Plus, she doesn't have to worry about anyone else wearing the same outfit.

Jennifer Gatins: "A lot of times my friends will be like, 'Hey, I love that skirt.' And it's nice to be able to say, 'Oh, I made it myself.'"

Some are even taking sewing lessons a stitch further and creating their own clothing lines.

Kristin Potenti: "I decided to take this class because I wanted to start my own clothing line. Initially, I was going to hire out everything, but then, when the economy took the turn for the worst, I decided to learn how to make the garments for myself."

Mom Jill Kafin wants to cut costs on children's clothing.

Jill Kafin: "The clothes get very expensive, and I saw such pretty patterns when I was in the store that I thought, I could do that."

She's also saving money on decorating her home in the sewing classes. You can learn to make throw pillows in an hour.

Jill Kafin: "I have made this pillow. I have made a pillow case for my daughter, and I was actually going to do some sheets for my son's bed."

Kerry Szymanski: "We'll teach you how to make curtains, you can also make tablecloths, napkins, duvet covers."

So, from cost to fashion it's all sewn up nicely.

Belkys Nerey: "You can choose from private or group sewing lessons."
