MIAMI (WSVN) - A South Florida woman is crediting the power of prayer for what her family calls a miraculous recovery, months after, police said, she was beaten and strangled by a roommate she’d met through Craigslist.

Danielle Jones has overcome tremendous odds. Speaking with 7News on Thursday, she said, people are astonished by the extent of her recovery. “Everybody’s really impressed by how I turned out,” she said. “Nobody expected me to turn out this way.”

Investigators said Jones was attacked by Byron Mitchell, who she found on Craigslist, in February. Police said the beating was so severe that she was in a coma for three weeks.

7News cameras captured Jones as her mother, Aimee Nikolov, took her out of Jackson Memorial Hospital in a wheelchair, on March 16. When asked how she felt, Jones’ voice was hoarse and weak, and she struggled to form a full sentence. “Enjoy outside. It looks nice,” she said.

Throughout her recovery process, Jones kept telling herself that she would be able to overcome her delicate condition. “Everything’s temporary. Everything in life is temporary,” she said. “Even if it’s a bad thing, it’s temporary, so whatever you’re going through, it will be temporary.”

Jones took the opportunity to thank everyone who prayed for her. “I only know about the prayers that I’ve received, and I feel like that had a big deal [to do] with it,” she said. “I feel like, if people didn’t pray for me, that I wouldn’t have survived.”

She also issued a warning to everyone who meets strangers online. “Be careful of social media, especially Craigslist,” she said, “and do be careful with any guys, whether they seem nice or anything, even if their résumés look nice. Just be careful in general.”

As Jones continues to recover, Nikolov could not be more thankful of her daughter’s remarkable recovery. “Danielle is evidence that prayers do get answered,” she said. “Miracles still do happen, and God is always with us.”
