FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - South Florida’s Memorial Day weekend got a high-flying kickoff when a group of U.S. Para-Commandos dropped in on Fort Lauderdale Beach, Saturday afternoon.

GoPro video captured the soldiers freefalling at 120 mph before opening their iconic black and gold canopies. The precision parachute demonstration was part of the Great American Beach Party.

Para-Commando Michael Puma said it all went off without a hitch. “Everybody’s feeling good. We did two passes. The first pass brought the American flag dow to open up the ceremonies down here at the beach fest,” he said. “Second pass, we did a four-way star to present how we do freefall operations in SOCOM [U.S. Special Operations Command]. We all landed safely on the drop zone.”

Para-Commandos are trained special operators with combat experience made up of from elite divisions of the United States military. “It’s amazing that a city would let us come down and let us participate in their celebration,” said Puma.
