HIALEAH GARDENS, FLA. (WSVN) - Truckers who took to the streets of Hialeah Gardens to protest what they consider low pay and inadequate benefits met with Miami-Dade officials, Monday.

Miami-Dade Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz was among the group hosting the truckers as they tried to resolve disputes that led to last week’s protest. Demonstrators lined up on Okeechobee Road, near the Palmetto Expressway, to block traffic, causing major delays, Tuesday.

Diaz said negotiations are open, but there are ground rules. “They’re gonna continue to talk and continue to work in favor of trying to find solutions,” he said. “These solutions are not easy, but they’re willing to do so, and the truckers are willing to listen. What we told them, though, at no time can they be blocking the ports or the areas that are important to commerce.”

Truckers said they’re angry with low pay and high insurance costs, among other matters up for discussion.
