MIAMI (WSVN) - It was a dance to remember for hundreds of Miami-Dade high school students with autism, as they attended prom Tuesday night.

Energy and excitement filled the room at the DoubleTree in Miami, as nearly 500 teens participated in the total prom experience.

“It started out six years ago, with about 40 students,” said Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho. “I remember walking into this hall and being so touched by what I saw that I just thought, ‘If it’s good for some, it ought to be good for everyone,’ and now we have 450 beautiful children celebrating prom like any other kid would.”

The students were decked out in tuxedos and formal gowns, had pictures taken, danced, and even took part in the crowning of a king and queen. Carvalho had the honor of announcing this year’s prom court.

It was a moment Shawn Kouri said he never thought he would experience but is now a memory he’ll always remember. “I was speechless when I heard I was going to be the prom king,” said Kouri. “I was actually selected, and then until I heard Mr. Carvalho call my name, I was like, “Oh, my goodness.” I will never forget it. It was like a once in a lifetime thing.”

The event has grown each year. “Just a phenomenal experience for them,” said John A. Ferguson High School Principal, Rafael Villalobos.
