FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say the roommate of a man found with severe head injuries at a Fort Lauderdale halfway house is facing a murder charge after the man died.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports records show 26-year-old Matthew Monte has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of 30-year-old Michael Duffy.

A police report says officers found Duffy gravely injured and unconscious with an iron sewing machine atop his head at the home on May 25. Police say Duffy and Monte had gotten into a “name-calling” fight that escalated into a stabbing.

Duffy was taken to a hospital, where he died nine days later.

Records show Monte is being held in jail without bond. It’s unclear whether he has an attorney.
