SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - Police are searching for a hit and run driver who left a man for dead overnight in Southwest Miami-Dade.

According to Miami-Dade Police, a man was struck and killed along Southwest 102nd Avenue and 171st Street, while he was riding his bike around 1 a.m., Wednesday.

Investigators said the bicyclist was traveling southbound on Southwest 102nd Avenue when he was hit from behind, most likely, by a gray sport utility vehicle.

Miami-Dade Police and fire rescue responded to the scene, and that is when the victim was pronounced dead.

Family members have identified the victim as 56-year-old Gary King, a man who often rode his green bicycle throughout the neighborhood.

“Evidently, he was going probably towards the shopping center last night, or this morning early, and somebody hit him,” said King’s brother, Karl King.

Early Wednesday morning, his mother, Margaret King, got a knock on her front door from police officers with news no mother should have to hear: Her son had been killed by a hit and run driver. “It hurts,” she said in tears. “Whoever knows needs to come forward. It’s not going to bring him back, but at least we can know.”

Police are now actively searching the area for a possible suspect. “Possible SUV, gray in color,” said a Miami-Dade PD spokesperson. “The vehicle then fled the scene. The damages to the vehicle may be in the front, the grille area or possible bumper.”

“I don’t like it at all. I mean, it’s crazy,” said a woman who lives nearby. “Look at this innocent person laying on the road, who could be somebody’s father, son, grandfather, and it’s crazy. Who could just do that to an innocent person? If you had any conscious or humanity about yourself, you would come and see what happened to this human being.”

If you have any information on this fatal hit and run, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a $1,000 reward.
