MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (WSVN) –Police have two students in custody who fled from Miami Carol City Senior High School and ran toward a field. Police believe at least one of them may have carried a gun.

According to the school board, late Friday morning, the school received phone calls about students who were suspiciously exchanging book bags. The school immediately called police, who then responded to the scene.

Once several Miami-Dade Schools Police units and administrators arrived, the two students were questioned. As they were being questioned, the students suddenly fled and ran onto the school’s baseball field. According to the school board, at least one of the students ran into a nearby neighborhood. Nearly an hour later, the two students were detained. They are being questioned at this time.

At some point, police believe, there was a third student involved, which is what prompted police to put up a perimeter in search of the supposed third student. “I was in the automotive class, and next thing you know you just see two helicopters flying around and you just see cops,” said a student who witnessed the search before his school was placed on lockdown.

Carol City High School, Carol City Middle School, and Carol City Elementary School were then all locked down during the search for the third student, but the lockdowns were soon lifted. “They said we’re doing a code red,” said a student.

“Being on lockdown, like, it was really scary, because I was in the bathroom,” said another student. “So, it was just very scary for me.”

It has since been determined that there was no third student involved.

K-9 police officers were sent to search the area, but no weapons have been found.

Students and faculty continued their school day as they normally would, but it was definitely a day full of excitement. “It has just been crazy all around the school,” said another student. “Rumors being passed around, different kinds of rumors, it’s going all the way around the school.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
