SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - Florida lawmakers are coming together to crackdown on crime during the Fourth of July weekend.

Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam, along with Senator Anitere Flores and Miami-Dade Police are offering tips to avoid identity-stealing card skimmers placed on gas pumps.

Officials said that there is an increase of this type of crime during the holiday weekend toward residents and visitors.

“We began to observe over a year ago a number of skimming devices that were being installed on the gas pumps,” said Putnam. “These skimming devices steal on average $1,000 per customer. These skimming devices can be left on for weeks or even months.”

In 2015, more than 250 skimmer devices were removed from gas pumps across Florida.
