OAKLAND PARK, FLA. (WSVN) - A homicide investigation is underway after someone was shot dead near West Cypress Creek Road and Interstate 95, Wednesday morning.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a report of shots fired near West Cypress Creek Road, at around 4 a.m.

According to police, four people left a bar named “Cheers” when they were shot at inside of their vehicle, causing them to veer off the side of the road. The suspected shooters fled the scene.

Chris Washington was nearby the shooting and said he heard the shots. “Loud noise, didn’t know what it was,” said Washington. “It was like a bomb. I saw a bunch of people running from the scene, jumping into their cars to leave.”

Two of the victims were taken to Broward Health North, police said. One of the victims, 24-year-old Leonard Hankins, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The remaining two victims were uninjured.

“The Broward Sheriff’s Office, Oakland park Road Patrol responded and found two men injured,” said Joy Oglesby of BSO. “Those men were transported to Broward Health North where one man was pronounced dead at 5:03 a.m.”

Police have not identified the surviving victim, who remains hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.
